Laurie Berkner Band 2009 small.jpg

The queen of kids’ music is back . . .it’s a fun ride.”
– People Magazine

LAURIE BERKNER BAND
A Birthday Party Concert!

Children’s music superstars and Nick Jr. channel favorites Laurie Berkner, Susie Lampert (keyboards), Adam Bernstein (bass) and Bob Golden (drums/ percussion) will perform a live “Birthday Party” concert on August 15. The band will play old and new hits, including songs from 2008’s critically acclaimed CD, ‘Rocketship Run.’

What do you bring to a Birthday Party Concert?
1. Wear your favorite party hat.
2. Picture of a birthday cake (go to our website to download the picture and color it in)
3. An animal for your head because animals have birthdays too!

Widely recognized as one of the most popular indie children’s recording artists in the United States, Laurie Berkner was at the forefront of the current progressive children’s music movement. Her intelligent songwriting, captivating vocals and infectious melodies have won not only legions of little fans, but also parents, who enjoy the music as much as their kids.

The Laurie Berkner Band has received tremendous critical acclaim. Time Magazine lauded Laurie as “a kind of sippy-cup Sheryl Crow…Berkner inhabits a kid’s curious perspective in her lyrics and pens folk-pop melodies that bear repeated – very repeated – listenings.” The Wall Street Journal called Laurie “one of the most popular children’s performer’s in America … Her music is distinctive because it speaks to kids without talking down to them, charming youngsters without boring grown-ups.” A former preschool music teacher by day and indie rocker by night, Laurie Berkner started selling her music out of her living room on her own label, Two Tomatoes Records. Laurie, Susie and Adam were the first artists to ever appear in music videos on Nick Jr. (formerly called Noggin), Nickelodeon’s 24-hour educational, commercial-free preschool network, and are featured in nearly all of the episodes of the channel’s “Jack’s Big Music Show.” Laurie was featured this summer in Nick Jr.’s one-hour prime-time music special, “Let’s Hear It For The Laurie Berkner Band!”. The special featured 17 music videos from the band, including three brand-new videos: “My Family,” which was created exclusively for the network and is not available anywhere, plus “Five Days Old” and “Fast and Slow (The Rabbit and the Turtle)” from the band’s latest CD ‘Rocketship Run.’

An Evening with David Johansen

An Evening With David Johansen will present the singer songwriter side of the multi-faceted entertainer, featuring songs from New York Dolls, his solo recordings with The David Johansen Band, Buster Poindexter, The Harry Smiths and back to the reformed New York Dolls who in the last four years, have released two critically acclaimed CD's, "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This" and the recent "Cause I Sez So."

An artist noted for his musical unpredictability, Johansen has been a consistent blues enthusiast since the earliest days of the Dolls, with covers of songs by Bo Diddley and Sonny Boy Williamson having been among their earliest numbers.

"I've been wanting to sing a bunch of songs unplugged that I don't normally get the opportunity to sing in a loud and fast Dolls show. As much as I love that, I also like to explore the more soulful side of singing. I'll be singing songs from throughout my career and maybe some songs that have inspired me, with acoustic guitar accompaniment in a mellow and intimate setting. It's gonna be very musical and beautiful," says Johansen.

Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men, four time Grammy award winners, hailed by the RIAA as the most commercially successful R&B group of all time – return to center stage with a stunning new album, Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA.  The Decca label debut is the first major-label release in five years for Boyz II Men, who have sold an estimated 60 million recordings in a spectacular career that will enter its seventeenth year in 2008.  Working with producer Randy Jackson, Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris, and Nathan Morris bring their special brand of musical magic to twelve all-time Motown hits including Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),” Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ “The Tracks of My Tears,” the Temptations’ “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” Edwin Starr’s “War,” and the Stevie Wonder favorites “I Was Made to Love Her” and “Ribbon In the Sky.” The album closes with a beautiful new recording of the record-breaking Boyz II Men hit, “End Of The Road,” produced by superstar Brian McKnight, who also sings on the track.

It’s no surprise that the concept should be such a perfect fit for Boyz II Men. The four-time Grammy Award-winning group was originally signed to Motown Records in 1991 and the very first Boyz II Men single, the million-selling  “Motownphilly” (No. 4 R&B/No. 3 Pop), was a tip of the musical hat to the soul music production centers of Detroit and Philadelphia. For the follow-up, Boyz II Men sang another Motown classic, G.C. Cameron’s “It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” a gold-certified single that shot to No. 1 R&B/No. 2 Pop.

The creation of the original Motown Sound was due in large part to the musicians of the label’s house band—later known as the Funk Brothers—who played on a vast number of Motown recordings, especially in the period 1960-1967. Producer Randy Jackson emulated this approach in the making of Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA—with stellar results. In praise of Boyz II Men, Randy Jackson says: “All of the greats have a natural talent that continually bubbles up no matter what’s going on. Boyz II Men are like that—just naturally gifted, and the most talented vocal group of our era.”
